West Indies all-rounder Raymon Reifer has set his sights on achieving his ‘ultimate dream’ – of adding to his lone Test cap from 2017 – on the England tour.
The left-armer, who has been quite proficient in getting the dukes ball to swing, turned heads on Day 2 of the intra-squad match in Manchester on Wednesday when he bagged five wickets across just 11 balls to give his team – led by Kraigg Brathwaite – the control of the proceedings against Jason Holder’s XI.
Reifer’s performance should do him a world of good, considering two of the three Tests in the series will be played in Manchester. That and the fact that he offers something different from the rest of the pacers in the line-up should also work in his favour.
“You can always give yourself a chance with the Dukes ball in England,” he said. “If you’re able to get a bit of shine on it, there is always some movement to be found in these conditions. If the ball is seaming around then it is favourable for me.
Reifer hopes to kick on from this fine performance and grab the opportunity if it presents itself during the three-game series. Despite not having played in whites for West Indies since his debut against New Zealand in 2017, Reifer holds the format on the highest pedestal.
“The ultimate dream is always to play Test cricket and to play as many Tests as possible. I made my debut three years ago and haven’t played since, so if the opportunity presents itself I’ll be looking to play.
“I’m not thinking too far ahead, we have another day in this match and potentially another chance with bat and ball then a four-day game coming up, but I’m pretty pleased with how it’s gone.”
