As a result of research at the University of Pittsburgh Medical School in the USA, it was announced that there is a vaccine that can fight the corona virus.
Scientists explained in an article published in the journal EBioMedicine on Thursday that the vaccine, which is ready to be released in a short time, has the potential to “severely reduce the pace of the epidemic”.
Explaining that the vaccine was prepared in a size as fingertip and that the first tests were carried out on mice, the experts also expressed that this vaccine produces enough antibodies to combat the corona virus. While scientists stated that the vaccine was produced at a great speed, associate professor Andrea Gambotto, who conducted the research, said, “Because we have done similar studies on diseases such as SARS and MERS. These two viruses are very closely related to the virus called SARS-CoV-2, and they showed us how certain proteins called spike protein behave. We have seen how these affect the immune system. ”
“We knew exactly where the new virus would fight,” Gambotto said. Explaining that the vaccine has been developed like a traditional flu vaccine, doctors said that the infectious protein made in the lab will be used to provide immunity. Scientists have stated that they have not yet examined the mice, but the vaccination application process has begun for approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
If necessary approvals are obtained, clinical trials on humans can begin within a few months. Experts announced that a small vaccine with 400 micro needles will be used instead of a single vaccine. Thus, spike proteins are expected to work better.
These micro needles, developed like a band-aid, are said to consist of sugar and protein. Gambotto said, “Scaling is not a priority for many vaccines, but if you are trying to develop a vaccine against an epidemic, this is the first thing you should do. The vaccine we developed can be extremely scalable. ”
