Turkey : Restoration in Galata Tower has been stopped! – The latest news

The 1500-year-old Galata Tower, which is one of the landmarks of Istanbul, owned by IMM, was contested in the past months to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

After the transfer, restoration work was started to turn the historical tower into a museum. The pier, which was established around the tower recently, closed the grooves on the wall used as a “bird house”, which is seen in many historical buildings.

SIGNATURE CAMPAIGN STARTED

Thereupon, the signature campaign was launched by the citizens on the website of change.org with the slogan “Let Galata Tower restoration not kill the parents”. It was pointed out in the signature text that the restoration work in the Galata Tower threatened the reproductive birds and caused the death of the baby birds.

It was emphasized that the ecologically important bird species that grow in the spaces on the front of the tower, such as the aboriginal, swift, sparrow, pigeon, are under serious and irreversible threat.

It was requested that the restoration works that caused the nests to deteriorate were postponed to the autumn when the birds stopped their breeding activities.

MINISTER: WE ARE BREAKING

Making a statement on the subject, Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy announced that the restoration work was postponed.

Ersoy, who made a statement on his social media account, said, “We could not remain insensitive to the sibling birds during the museumization work carried out in Galata Tower. We take a break from the external maintenance of the tower until the time of the birds to collapse. There will also be a special section for the birds of Galata in the museum. I would like to thank everyone who is sensitive. ”
