Turkey : 720 thousand children working in Turkey

With the curfew coming under the age of 20, many children who have to go to work will have to stay at home. Turkstat announced that “according to the 2019 Child Labor Survey” results, is among the 720 thousand children aged 5-17 years running an economic activity in Turkey.

There are also 5 years old children among 720 thousand working children. The rate of employment, which shows the share of children working in the 5-17 age group among children in the same age group, is 4.4 percent.

70.6 PERCENT OF THE WORKING CHILDREN’S MEN

While 79.7 percent of working children were in the 15-17 age group, 15.9 percent were in the 12-14 age group and 4.4 percent were in the 5-11 age group.

When analyzed by gender, it was seen that 70.6 percent of working children were boys and 29.4 percent were girls.

34.3 percent did not continue education

While 65.7 percent of working children attend an education, this rate was 65.6 percent for boys and 66.1 percent for girls. According to age groups, 72.0 percent of working children in the 5-14 age group and 64.1 percent of children working in the 15-17 age group also attended an education. 34.3 percent of working children did not continue education.

35.9 PERCENT OF CHILDREN WORKED TO HELP THE FAMILY

The first place in working reasons of working children was “helping the economic activity of the household” with 35.9 percent, while this was followed by “contributing to household income” with 34.4 percent, “learning jobs, having a profession”. 6.4 percent of the children worked to “meet their own needs”.

45.5 PERCENT IN THE SERVICE SECTOR

30.8 percent of working children took part in agriculture, 23.7 percent in industry and 45.5 percent in service sector. When examined by age group; It was observed that children working in the 5-14 age group gained weight in the service sector with 64.1 percent and those working in the 15-17 age group with 51.0 percent.

66 PERCENT AT A REGULAR WORKPLACE

66.0% of working children worked in regular workplaces, 30.4% in field-garden, 3.0% in mobile unstable workplace or market place, and 0.5% at home.
