A fire broke out in the refugee camp in Vathy, the island of Samos, near Greece’s Kuşadası.
The fire in the area of makeshift huts made of plastic materials grew in a short time.
In the fire, which Samos fire brigade interfered immediately, about 10 clubs where refugees stayed were completely burned.
It was stated that the fire started when the flames bouncing from the cooking stove splashed into the hut covered with plastic material.
HEALTH LOSS OR INJURY INFORMATION NOT SHARED
Samos Mayor George Stantzos and Deputy Governor of Samos Vassilis Panourakis closely monitored the extinguishing efforts, and no information was reported about whether he was killed or injured.
It is stated that there are about 10 thousand people, mostly Syrian, in the refugee camp, 8 thousand in containers and the rest in the huts.
REACTION TO THE GOVERNMENT
Saying that the camp was established to serve a thousand people years ago, the people of Samos targeted the Greek government in social media after the fire.
Stating that tens of thousands of refugees have accumulated on all islands due to the government’s policy of not taking refugees to the mainland, a disaster can occur at any time, and the people of Samos called for the refugees on the island to be sent to the mainland as soon as possible.
