Emphasizing that patients with diabetes are more affected by all viral diseases. Dr. Yıldız explained the ways to protect patients from corona and increase immunity and made important warnings to fasting patients.

“In Turkey, more than 11 million diabetes patients react negatively to the corona virus outbreaks. We know that all viral diseases are more severe in patients with diabetes. Long-term diabetes, irregular blood glucose and cardiovascular or kidney damage due to diabetes increase this risk. In patients with diabetes, corona virus disease is also more severe. Speaking in the form of Prof. Dr. Yildiz said that patients with diabetes caused more hospitalization and more loss of life due to the corona virus.
4 STEPS TO STRENGTHEN THE IMMUNE SYSTEM
He also gave information about the treatment of individuals with diabetes with COVID-19 infection. Dr. Yıldız explained how patients with diabetes should be protected from the corona virus and how they can strengthen the immune system:
* It should pay attention to measures such as isolation, protection of physical distance, wearing a mask on the street and frequent hand washing.
* We can list the things needed to keep the immune system strong in 4 items:
* 6-8 hours of uninterrupted night sleep
* Healthy, balanced and adequate nutrition
*Exercise
* Stress management
WHAT DIABETES PATIENTS SHOULD TAKE ATTENTION IN?
* Patients should have daily routines; they should take care to get up at the same time every day and sleep at the same time.
* Meal times should be similar every day. Their diet should be in line with the recommendations of doctors and dietitians. In addition, there is no need to use additional vitamins or minerals due to diabetes.
Professor Dr. Yildiz also explained the benefits of exercise. “We recommend walking for a few minutes every half hour, at least 2-3 times a day for 10 to 15 minutes walking at home or in the garden, taking care of social distance.” Speaking in the form of Prof. Dr. Yıldız emphasized that weight training would also be beneficial.
Professor Dr. Yildiz made suggestions to diabetes patients regarding the coincidence of Ramadan in the month of Ramadan:
Fasting or intermittent fasting has no proven negative effect on the body’s immune system. However, in Ramadan, patients with diabetes have an increased risk of excessive drops or rises in blood sugar, excessive fluid loss from the body, or intravascular clot formation.
* Medical evaluations of fasting diabetes patients before Ramadan; training of physical activity, meal planning, sugar tracking, dosage and timing of drugs should be received.
He also shared details about the content of iftar and sahur meals. Dr. Yıldız warned against fluid consumption and excessive physical activity.
IN WHICH CASES SHOULD I LAST?
Referring to the importance of regular glucose measurement, Prof. Dr. Yıldız said, “If the measured sugar value is below 60 or above 300, fasting on that day should be left.”
In addition, when stating the symptoms of corona virus, Prof. stating that fasting should be stopped. Dr. Yildiz also explained which patients’ fasting is inconvenient.
Which patients should not fast?
* Patients with Type 1 diabetes and patients with Type 2 diabetes using multiple insulin should not fast.
* Patients who have had emergency treatment in the hospital due to too high or too low diabetes in the last 3 months, who have not noticed low diabetes, have diabetes-induced cardiovascular disease, advanced eye, kidney or nerve damage, pregnant women, elderly and fond patients, high health risk due to fasting.
