Thanks to the newly signed supply contract, the rate of renewable electricity used in Chengdu reached 100 percent; Thus, the plant’s CO2 emissions will decrease by more than 11,000 tons per year.
This development represents an important step towards Volvo Cars’ goal of moving to climate-neutral production by 2025. This target is part of the company’s wider climate plan, which aims to reduce the total carbon footprint by 40 percent for each car between 2018 and 2025. Volvo Cars aims to be a completely climate-neutral company in 2040.
Until recently, the Chengdu plant obtained 70 percent of its electricity from renewable sources. With the new contract, the remaining 30 percent is targeted.
“We aim to take concrete steps to reduce our carbon footprint,” said Javier Varela, Volvo Cars Industrial Operations and Quality President. “It is an important milestone for us to provide a completely renewable electricity supply for our largest plant in China and it shows our determination to progress in concrete steps towards our goals.”
