Bezmialem Vakıf University Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Cardiology Specialist Dr. Ramazan Özdemir and Vice Dean and Physical Therapy Specialist Dr. Teoman Aydın studied at the Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty at the same time. Two friends, who later turned to different specialties, rose in their careers in other cities.
Professor, who came together as the dean and vice dean years later, Dr. Özdemir injured the knee while doing sports and went to his friend Teoman Aydın for examination. When Aydın had his knee examined, he immediately examined him after Aydın said, “I have heart palpitations these days, I have shortness of breath and fatigue.” Prof. who could not find any findings in the previous check-up exams. Dr. Özdemir did not settle and also performed echocardiography. The truth turned out there, in the heart of his 52-year-old colleague was a hole about 2 centimeters in size that had existed since birth. It was even a chance that he could come up to this age without any symptoms and complications.

Professor Dr. Ramazan Özdemir said, “He was lucky that he could reach this age without any complications. It could throw clots and develop embolism in the heart or brain. We have diagnosed his illness by chance. “If I hadn’t injured my knee, maybe we wouldn’t even notice it.”
Professor Dr. Pointing out that the congenital heart holes, known as ASD (Atrial Septal Defect), is one of the most common congenital heart diseases. Dr. Özdemir said, “We processed it the next day. We have closed the hole with a technique known as umbrella method among the people by entering the groin as if it was angio with interventional methods. He was discharged the next day and returned to his job. ASD is usually diagnosed in childhood. If necessary, it is closed, but sometimes it can go to advanced ages without being noticed. If the size of the hole is under a centimeter, it becomes more difficult to notice. It does not pose a great risk for a long time. But patients complain of fatigue, shortness of breath or palpitations at advanced ages. If the hole is large, it can cause right heart failure, especially if it is 2 centimeters and above. Therefore, it is important to be diagnosed and closed early, ”he said.
‘I HAVE LONG TERM MILITARY SERVICE WITH THE HOLE IN MY HEART’
About 6 months ago, his friend, a cardiologist. Dr. Explaining that Özdemir came to him with the complaint of knee pain and that the coincidence that led him to healing started on that day. Dr. Teoman Aydın gave the following information:
“After doing sports, an injury occurred in the knee. While I was examining him, I was also talking, “ There are not many opportunities from polyclinics, but I have such complaints. I wonder if I had a heart check? ”I said. Mr. Ramazan also examined me and immediately asked for my old tests. He couldn’t see anything there. When he performed echocardiography, he saw that there was a hole in my heart. The next day I found myself at the operating table. He performed the operation successfully. I returned to my profession the next day. I did my military service with a hole in my heart, as well as a long term in the east. I didn’t have a problem with my luck. We have come to today without a complication until the age of 52. You have to be thankful to Allah.
