Turkey : 8-pound kidney survived by transfusion

Two families from Trabzon experienced great joy in the first cross-transplant operation in 2020, which took place at the Medical Park Antalya Hospital Complex. While Genetically polycystic kidney patient Öner Atamert’s wife Şennur Atamert (38) donated kidney to Özlem Gümüştaş (42) who developed kidney failure due to protein leakage, Özlem Gümüştaş’s wife Mehmet Gümüştaş (49) gave the kidney to Öner Atamert. . Atamert and Gümüştaş families, now ‘sister families’, said that they will continue the friendship that started in the operating room for life.

‘THE FIRST TIME I MEET WITH A KIDNEY’

Head of the Organ Transplantation Department of the Medical Park Antalya Hospital Complex, which conducts cross-transplant operations. Dr. Alper Demirbaş said that both patients are in good health. Professor Dr. Demirbaş said that although he has performed more than 6,500 kidney transplants, he has encountered such a large polycystic kidney for the first time.

Stating that there are hundreds of small cysts in the kidneys in polycystic kidney disease. Dr. Demirbaş said that they do not normally remove the kidneys of the patient in kidney transplant operations, but they were surprised when they saw the right kidney of Öner Atamert, which weighed 8 kilos and 100 grams and was 40 centimeters tall. Prof. dr. Demirbaş said, “We had to remove this kidney of the patient because there was no place in the abdomen to transport the new kidney. This was the kidney that was the first time I saw it. ”

THE PATIENT LIKE A 9-MONTH PREGNANT

Professor noted that the patient was like a 9-month pregnant. Dr. “Even it was like a twin pregnancy,” said Demirbaş. Professor Dr. Noting that the weight of a healthy kidney is 100-120 grams and its height is 10 centimeters, Demirbaş said, “Now estimate the size of this kidney we removed.”

Professor Öner Atamert also said that the left kidney was polycystic but they did not remove it. Dr. Demirbaş said, “If we also removed that kidney, it would be a very big operation. So we left the left kidney. If there is a problem in the future, we will remove it, ”he said.

Öner Atamert, who survived the polycystic kidney with a weight of 8 kilograms and a weight of 40 centimeters in length, has thanked everyone who regained their health. “Thank you very much to the kidney-giving family, Alper teacher and hospital staff,” said Atamert. Atamert said, “But I was very surprised when I learned that my kidney was 40 centimeters tall. Thank God I got my health, ”he said.

‘WE MET WITH SISTER FAMILY IN TRABZON’

Şennur Atamert, a beauty expert in Trabzon, said that his technician wife, Öner Atamert, has been treated since 1992. “He started dialysis approximately 4 years ago, but dialysis was not working anymore.”

Şennur Atamert said that the doctors in Trabzon said that he wanted to give kidney to his wife after saying that he should have a transplant, “Our blood group was not compatible. Thanks to our doctor in Trabzon suggested cross transplant. He introduced us to the Gümüştaş family.

And when we decided to be transported, we came to Antalya together. I gave kidney to Mrs. Özlem. His wife gave kidney to my wife. We are very happy. We are now sister families, ”he said.

‘WE HAVE RECEIVED OUR HEALTH, VERY THANK YOU’

Özlem Gümüştaş, who had been diagnosed with protein leakage in her kidney about 12 years ago and started drug treatment, and was on dialysis due to insufficient drug treatment over the years, explained her experiences as follows:

“Now my blood pressure was starting to rise. My doctor in Trabzon said I should be transplanted. We had a cross-transfer with the family introduced by our doctor. God bless you. Thus, we both got our health. We are now sister families. Thank goodness, ”he said.

Özlem Gümüştaş’s wife Mehmet Gümüştaş stated that they are now brothers with the Atamert family and said, “May God bless everyone.” Two families discharged from the hospital are preparing to return to their hometown Trabzon in the coming days. (DHA)
